Why Should I Become a Clean Boater?

Boaters who are better informed, will result in positive changes to our recreational boating environment.

Clean Water is Irreplaceable! Pristine waters for boating, swimming, fishing or paddling is the only resource we cannot replace. Not only do we play in it, but lakes and rivers are the primary drinking water source for most Canadians. If we do not change some things that we are doing today, we will not have the clean water to enjoy tomorrow.

It's our water, lets protect it - As individual boaters, you have the most to gain from a clean environment.

Who is responsible for deteriorating water quality? Everyone using our waters has an effect on water quality. In the overall scheme, most boaters, boats, marinas and yacht clubs contribute to water quality issues in some way or another. However, as recreational water users it is our responsibility to diminish the footprint we leave behind. As Clean Boaters, we demonstrate that we are taking a pro-active stance and leading the way in the preservation of our lakes and rivers for future generations.

It's your choice - The marina and products you choose will add to the protection of our water and air.

Several Eco-Rated marinas and yacht clubs have initiated similar environmental "Best Management Practices" in all operations and are practicing continuous quality improvement methods. Look for one near you and support their efforts in making the waterways cleaner for you to enjoy. Only you can choose to use environmentally responsible products. Make sure that all products used on your boat carry an EcoLogo? The EcoLogo ensures that the product has been certified by Environment Canada's Environmental Choice Program. It ensures the product has been produced in an environmentally responsible manner in a certified manufacturing facility. The product is certified to cause the least possible environmental impact while performing the task it was designed to do. EcoLogo products are available for most personal hygiene, cleaning and maintenance chores aboard and a complete list is available at www.environmentalchoice.ca.

You can make a difference - Yes you are just one boater, but collectively we will make a difference.

As individuals we can all contribute to cleaning up our environment. The Clean Boater Handbook outlines best environmental practices for the Spring Pre-launch, Summer boating, and Fall winterization. Using common sense ideas you may not have considered before can make our waterways cleaner for generations of enjoyment.
